My Favorite Lesson of 2009 is “Go Pro!” What’s Yours?

Earth DropletMy favorite lesson of 2009 is “Go Pro”. The underlying premise is the concept of living in the moment or as Eckhart Tolle brought to the world in a big way – The Power of Now.

Now is reality. The past is over and can’t be re-done and the future hasn’t happened yet.

The only real power we have is right here and now.

Moment by moment we create the reality that unfolds. It sounds deep but it really isn’t. The decisions I make and actions I take NOW impact the future I experience.

The idea of “Go Pro” simply means that in each moment, whatever it is that I’m doing, I’m going to do it with my full attention and to the best of my abilities.

If I’m writing an article, all my energy and focus and effort will go into writing the best article I’m capable of in that moment. If I’m making a sandwich, same thing. If I’m talking with my daughter, I’ll listen with all my energy and focus (I say listen because she does 99% of the talking – she’s 17 he he).

Think about this for a moment… what reality would you experience if moment by moment you invested fully, no holds barred, completely engaged and present?

You’d be surprised how often the mind wanders away on us and I don’t know about you but I’d rather be living in the present to the very best of my abilities than stuck in my head replaying the past or worrying about the future.

Each time my mind tries to wander (and it always does) I’ll notice it and bring my attention back to fully engage in what I’m doing.

I’m taking this one with me into 2010 and beyond too because it’s really more of a way to be and do rather than a single lesson to be learned. Big thanks goes to @marieforleo and her Rich Happy Hot Virtual Mastery program.

My big lesson, no wait …. HUGE lesson for 2009 is ‘Heal thyself and the creative energy will flow in ways you never imagined possible…’

  2. Great post Gina! Loved it. My favourite lesson is:

Be sensitive to how you’re feeling.

Living in the moment doesn’t do much good if you feel like cr*p all the time (and worse…don’t even know it!). So I take care to do my best to feel good (I’ve come up with some tricks to make it easier). When I do happen to be in a funk, I’m not worried because I know it will leave easily, without any lasting effect.

    Great post Gina! :)
My biggest lesson(s) for 2009 are:

Do what is right for me (not what is right for others, or easier, or what is expected). But what is right for me- I made the toughest decision this year in ending a relationship but in the end I am happier and more at peace and feeling empowered that I did it for me!

To be clear on what I want. When I set intentions out to the universe I need to be very clear on what it is. The universe will take care of the when, but when I leave the details up to chance…. well let’s just say I experienced this earlier this year when ending a relationship. I set my intention for what I wanted in a new romantic partner. I got exactly what I listed I wanted. I didn’t get exactly what I didn’t think to list lol. So be clear!

I am more focused then ever now on what I want in 2010, Growth is my themeword for the year. 2009 saw alot of changes, some very difficult decisions, and alot of losses (not just for me, but experienced by those close to me). Now it is time to regroup, reflect on what I have accomplished and welcome 2010 with an open heart and mind.

Best wishes to everyone for a fantastic 2010.

Wow, there have been so many. For me 2009 has been a challenging year, therefore lots of great opportunities to grow. Here is what I posted on my blog: http://streetsmartmoms.blogspot.com/2009/12/december-time-for-reflection.html
So what have I learned, hmm. I have learned

    * it is okay to grieve what was,
    * it is okay feel afraid,
    * it is okay to ask for help,
    * it is okay to fall apart for a little while,
    * it is okay to take your time to heal,
    * it is okay to take your time to work through the changes, and
    * I don’t have to have all the answers today. I make one decision at a time and then I look for the next right thing to do.

I hope this is helpful to someone. Thank you for asking and I look forward to sharing 2010 with you.

  7. Fantastic post Gina–and I agree. We become incredibly powerful (and so much more effective) when we are one hundred percent present. It can be so tough though–especially in a world that encourages us busy women to always be multitasking. When we aren’t present, we not only miss out on the moment, we tend to end up feeling out of control of our lives.

My biggest lesson of 2009 is about stretching and thinking big and realizing that small limited thinking just keeps things (and me) small and limited. It’s been fun to realize that what was a big stretch in January 2009 is common practice for me now. I can’t wait to see what 2010 brings!

    • Gina Bell says:

Hi Melissa, remember when multi-tasking used to be a bragging right? Not so much these days lol. I can definitely remember those outta control feelings from my old multi-tasking days. Love your lesson of stretching and thinking big… I’m going to apply that to my already scary big goals to see how I can stretch them just that much more. With this motto as your driving force I’m sure you will astound yourself this year! xo

The biggest lesson I learned is that I need to focus. Now that I look back on 2009, I see that I wasted so much time doing unnecessary things, procrastinating, busy work and so on. I could have achieved so much more had I have clarity. The motto of this year is “Focus!” for me.

  16. Hi Gina :)

Very cool post, thank you! I love your “Go pro” motto – it reminds me of one of my “a-ha”s in 2009, which I list first in the list below…

Three biggest lessons that last year taught me are the following:
    1. One of my top 5 values is EXCELLENCE. It’s always been extremely important for me, I just never realized it this until attending Ali Brown’s SHINE in November. And it’s not about perfection – it’s about providing the best possible quality, being excellent in everything I do, and simply setting the bar higher.
    2. Leaps of faith are essential for growth, happiness and true freedom. I left the corporate world and I feel great about it!
    3. Living my truth and speaking my voice is more important than meeting other people’s expectations. No need to comment that, I suppose :)

I wish you and everyone reading this comment a smashingly successful 2010, full of inspiration, magic and wonderful business and personal relationships!

    • Gina Bell says:

Hi Martina, Excellence is a winning value for sure and I love that you stated it’s not about perfection. Perfection can be so paralyzing as can living up to the expectations of others. I beat to my own drum now too – always ;) Wishing you a smashingly successful and magical 2010 right back xo.

  17. @Triciadycka Thanks for sharing your fave lesson of '09 on the blog. I'm really enjoying reading all of the posts :) http://bit.ly/8KFRkQ

  18. Tricia Dycka says:

    Great post Gina.

2009 my biggest AHA was Really engaging in whatever was in front of me. Engaging in the project I was currently working on. Really listening to the person I was talking to without letting my mind go a million miles which meant I was more in my head then really listening.
Creating action steps that honored who I am.

    Have a wonderful 2010

Tricia I SO know what you mean. Fully engaging has been life changing for me – especially my personal relationships. It’s amazing how caught up in my head I used to be – almost like not living at all. YAY to really engaging and LIVING life. xo

  19. Linda Eaves says:

    Hi Gina -
Just saw this quote in 2010 but realized I’ve been doing it naturally for a while now. It’s really helped even if everything is still a little “messy” as it evolves.
This comes via our friend Marie Forleo.
“Whatever you are meant to do, move toward it and it will come to you.”- Gloria Dunn
Reading that gives me peace and makes it so I can exhale. I love simple!

    • Gina Bell says:

Hey Linda! I love that quote too and definitely keeping things simple (oh and Marie too LOL). Also love that you touched on how moving towards what you are meant to do can seem “messy” as it unfolds/evolves. That is so true. The key is to keep on stepping towards it. Thanks for sharing xo.
